Instructional Guide for Parents:
Dear Parents,
Talking to your child about social media and online use is an important step in helping them navigate the digital world safely and responsibly.
Here is a simple guide to help you start these conversations. Click on the titles for details:
1. Create a Safe Space for Discussion
Start by letting your child know that they can talk to you about anything they encounter online.
Encourage them to share their online experiences without fear of being judged or punished.
2. Ask Open-Ended Questions
Begin with simple questions like:
“What apps or websites do you enjoy using?”
“Who do you talk to online?”
This will help you understand their online habits and guide the conversation naturally.
3. Explain the Importance of Privacy
Teach your child about keeping their personal information private. Remind them not to share details like their home address, school name, or phone number with strangers.Explain why strong passwords are important and how to create them.
4. Talk About Online Behaviour
Discuss how they should treat others online, reminding them that kindness and respect are as important on the internet as they are in real life.
Ask them how they would respond if they encountered bullying or negativity online.
5. Set Boundaries Together
Work with your child to create healthy rules for screen time, social media use, and appropriate content. Make it a collaborative discussion so they feel included in the decisions.
6. Explain the Risks
Talk openly about the dangers of interacting with strangers online, and why it’s important to be cautious about who they communicate with.
Teach them to recognise and report inappropriate content, and encourage them to come to you if something makes them uncomfortable.
7. Stay Informed
Keep yourself updated on the apps, games, and websites your child is using. This will help you understand their online world and address any concerns more effectively.
8. Encourage Positive Use
Highlight the benefits of using the internet for learning, creativity, and connecting with friends. Encourage them to use social media responsibly to share ideas and support others.
9. Keep the Conversation Ongoing
Regularly check in with your child about their online activities. This will show them that you are interested and that it’s okay to talk about their digital experiences.
By maintaining open, supportive conversations, you can help your child enjoy the benefits of social media and the internet while staying safe.
