On Saturday 24th May 2025, pupils from Grades 1 to 5 at Hubert Ogunde Memorial School proudly participated in the annual OMEP Children’s Day celebration in Lagos. As always, it was a joyful occasion filled with music, art, games, and friendship. But this year’s event brought something even more special—a hands-on first aid and CPR learning experience that left a lasting impression on our young learners.

Our pupils were warmly welcomed and enthusiastically engaged in all the activities. Amongst the highlights was a practical first aid session, where they learned how to respond in emergencies, including how to perform basic CPR. Guided by caring professionals, they practised checking for breathing and safely delivering chest compressions—skills many adults only learn later in life.

Watching our children step forward with such interest and responsibility was deeply moving. Their eagerness to learn how to protect and help others in times of need reminded us just how capable children are when given the opportunity. It was a powerful lesson in empathy, bravery, and community care.

Why Teaching First Aid Matters—Even at a Young Age

Introducing first aid education at an early age not only equips children with potentially life-saving skills but also builds confidence, awareness, and resilience. These are tools they can carry with them for life—helping a classmate who’s fallen, supporting a family member in distress, or simply knowing what to do in uncertain situations.

At Hubert Ogunde Memorial School, we are committed to nurturing not just academic potential, but also character and compassion. The OMEP Children’s Day event gave our pupils a chance to grow in all these ways, while celebrating with their peers from other schools.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to OMEP Nigeria for once again organising such a meaningful and well-rounded event. Moments like these inspire our children to become the kind, responsible citizens of tomorrow.
