Our Curiculum

Curriculum Overview

Hubert Ogunde Memorial Montessori School provides a structured, child-centred curriculum informed by Montessori principles. The curriculum is designed to support children’s academic development, personal wellbeing, independence, and cultural understanding within a safe and supportive learning environment.

Curriculum Intent

The curriculum aims to ensure that all children:

  • develop strong foundations in literacy, numeracy, and communication
  • build independence, concentration, and responsibility
  • learn to respect themselves, others, and their environment
  • develop curiosity, creativity, and a love of learning
  • gain age-appropriate cultural, social, and practical life skills

Curriculum Structure

Learning is organised into interconnected areas, delivered through hands-on activities, guided exploration, and purposeful observation.

Core Areas of Learning

  • Practical Life: independence, coordination, care of self and environment
  • Language: speaking, listening, early reading, writing, and vocabulary development
  • Mathematics: number sense, counting, patterns, measurement, and problem awareness
  • Sensorial Learning: refining the senses through structured materials
  • Cultural Studies: history, geography, science, arts, and cultural awareness
  • Creative Expression: music, movement, art, and storytelling

Progression and Continuity

The curriculum is designed to support clear progression from early years through primary stages. Learning builds gradually from concrete experiences to more abstract understanding, in line with children’s developmental readiness.

Progression is supported through:

  • sequenced learning materials
  • repetition and mastery of key skills
  • increasing levels of independence and responsibility
  • age-appropriate expectations and challenge

Assessment and Monitoring

Assessment is ongoing and primarily observation-based. Staff monitor children’s development, engagement, and understanding through daily interaction and structured observation.

Assessment is used to:

  • inform planning and next steps in learning
  • identify individual strengths and areas for support
  • ensure learning activities remain appropriate and inclusive

Assessment information is handled professionally and shared with parents through appropriate communication channels.

Inclusion and Support

The school is committed to inclusive practice. Learning activities are adapted where appropriate to support individual needs while maintaining high expectations for all pupils.

Preparing Children for the Next Stage

The curriculum supports children’s readiness for future learning by developing:

  • confidence and independence
  • communication and social skills
  • self-regulation and concentration
  • a positive attitude towards learning

Transition is approached carefully and respectfully, recognising each child’s developmental stage.
