Dear Parents and Guardians,
We are writing to inform you about a recent incident that temporarily affected our school’s online presence. Last week, Hubert Ogunde Memorial School experienced a cyberattack that rendered our website inaccessible for three days.
Thanks to our technical team’s swift action, the issue has now been resolved, and all systems are functioning as normal.
We understand this may have caused concern, and we appreciate your patience and understanding during this time.
What Is a Cyberattack?
A cyberattack is an attempt by malicious individuals or groups to access, disrupt, or damage computer systems or online services. In our case, the attackers tried to overwhelm the website with traffic, making it impossible for visitors to access vital information. It’s similar to someone jamming the school gate so no one can come in or out.
Why Cybersecurity Matters—Even for Schools
As schools continue to embrace digital learning, it is crucial we all understand the importance of keeping our information and online tools safe. Cybersecurity helps protect sensitive information such as your child’s learning progress, school updates, and private records.
How You Can Help at Home
Cyber safety isn’t just the responsibility of schools. Here are a few simple steps you can take to protect your child’s learning experience and your own digital life:
- Talk to your child about online safety. Encourage them to never share personal information such as addresses, passwords, or school details online without your permission.
- Use strong passwords. Ensure you and your child use different, secure passwords for different websites and apps.
- Keep devices updated. Always install the latest software updates on phones, tablets, and computers, they often contain important security fixes.
- Be cautious of unfamiliar links. If something looks suspicious, like an unexpected email, a pop-up asking for information-don’t click.
- Use child-friendly educational platforms. Ensure the apps or websites your child uses are recommended by the school or trusted educational sources.
Looking Ahead
At Hubert Ogunde Memorial School, we take digital safety very seriously. As part of our response, we are further strengthening our website and online learning tools to ensure your child’s educational experience remains safe and uninterrupted.
We are also working on creating a Cyber Smart Parent’s Guide, which we will share with you soon, filled with easy-to-understand tips for protecting your family online.
Thank you once again for your trust and continued support. Together, we can build a safer digital environment for our learners.
Kind regards,
The Management Team
