According to the Department of Work & Pension (UK) and JPMorgan Chase (2020), 9 out of 10 jobs require basic digital understanding and skills. There is now a deliberate and notable focus on technology literacy and skills in virtually every country.
For example, on the 5th of August 2022, incumbent President Uhuru Kenyatta announced the country-wide roll-out of the coding curriculum in Kenyan primary and secondary schools in collaboration with Kodris Africa.
It is now essential to prepare young people for the future of work and the unknown, for both developments at home and for opportunities abroad. The opposite is really not negotiable.
We are really pleased about the reception from the previous PTA meeting and thrilled to partner with you on a NEW curriculum enrichment programme: Future Skills + Code Club.
In this update, we present a snapshot of the programme and what pupils and parents can expect to benefit from the initiative.
Future Skill (Grade 1-5)
Future skill is a new curricular addition to the existing construct. Future Skill is a new subject that is focused on empowering pupils with the appropriate mindset needed to constructively participate and succeed during technology adoption and beyond.
This part of the programme creatively expands on the current ICT class and focuses more on the theory around design thinking and ethics and less on practicals.
Code Club (Grade 3-5)
Code Club is a new extra-curricular activity that creatively enriches and amplifies the impact of curricular ICT. Code Club is held weekly and pupils will have the opportunity to select a topic and project of choice below for an end-of-year project.
- Video games design
- Website and App design
- Robotics
This part of the programme constitutes more practicals than theory as pupils (Grade 1-5) will be exposed to theory during Future Skills classes.
We hope you find this update helpful and useful. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school office or the IT department. An information booklet about the programme is also available at the school office.
We wish you a wonderful new year and pray that the joy, peace, love and fun of the festive season remain with you throughout the New Year.
